The site starts here, all from 2016:

Skopelos is said to have 365 churches, one for each day.
31 churches I found in January and
28 in February. Totaly here I think 75 churches.

60. – 1. Agios Theodoris on the way up to Raches, the bay of Glifoneri in the background. This is the 60th church here.

I do not count these small road shrines,
– they are beautiful too.

61. – 2. Privat church on the “new” road out of town, just after the turn-off for Kambos. Only church I know here with so much blue.

 62. – 3. Agios Artemis, says the Tarrain map.
This is out of town, off to the right before Agios Reginos monastery.

63. – 4. Agios Nikolaos, I think, on the left side on the “new” road just before Agios Reginos monastery.

64. – 5. in Elios, up right at about middle of the road there.

65. – 6. inside Elios town

66. – 7. – on the main-road before Panormos

67. – 8. inside Glossa town

February – 28 churches

One church for every day of the year, – proably more!

I easily found one for each day in January, do not think February will be more difficult. I am looking at churches every day, we do have a great many of them. So here are 28 for February;

32. – 1st for February, walking from Pefkias to Potami

The number refers to; 32 – is the 32nd church here, 1st is for the 1st in February.

I do not count this small road shrines, I call them “eklisakias”

36. – 5. Profitis Ilias on top of a hill, next to the “top road”
– Ilias churches are always up on a hilltop.
The legend says that he was a seaman and after many years he was so tired of the sea, that he wanted to get as fare away from it as possible. He took one oar on each shoulder and he asked people he met if they knew what the oars was. Finally high up in the mountains nobody recognized the oars and there he build his chapel and lived for the rest of his life.

Somesays this is Pefkias, but a kalivi owner next door said to me that on his paper for his kalivi, the area is called Vromoneri, as the spring nearly down by Potami Valley.

So this was 28 churches for February. This year 2016 there will be 29 days, but mostly, as you know, it is 365, and that is my aim to complete!
Only 306 churches to go!

 

January

How many churches are there on Skopelos?

SORRY THIS SITE WILL NOT BE UPDATED!

It is said that Skopelos has more than 365 churches, one for each day, but I know that here are built new churches, so how many do we have? A good friend of mine challenged me to find one church a day, and that’s what I will do.
Here are 31 for January but please do not take notice of the numbers on the photos, I will make a proper catalog later, first I will count and later I will find the names also.
Please help me if you can?
Here are January`s 31 churches;

1. Agios Georgios Kyratsos, down of Kastro, one of the oldest churches in town.

2. Maybe the oldest church of Skopelos town. It is the top church along the old town wall facing the sea.

3. Profitis Ilias, up between Glifoneri and Glisteri. A beautiful place.

4. Agii Panton in Aloupi, just after the cemetery.

5. Agios Spiridona in town

6. Agios Philipphos in the outskirts of town, close to Livadiotissa

7. Agios Georgios, down of Evangelistria monastery

8. Agios Reginos, the monastery of the patron saint of Skopelos, on the road to Panormos, just out of town

NB – THE COUNTING OF CHURCHES STARTS ON THE PAGE CALLED JANUARY.
NOT ON THIS PAGE!!!

 When I moved here in 1983 I was told that it was 365 churches on the island,  one for each day, – and I have been told the same now 34 years later, how come? I have seen churches being build, so how many? I think about 400!

I was also told that every family with respect for itself has their own church.

A friend said to me today, why don’t you start counting churches,
one for each day! I took the challenge!!!

I have by now 33 churches, I put the photos here now, and I will put them into boxes with areas later. Here you can see that I have managed more then one church a day already in 2016;

Will you make a suggestion? 

Today 31st of January is the first day, so many things here are not ready.
But I just had to start!
